Sculpture: Musée du Louvre

The Musée du Louvre has always suffered from a kind of embarrassment of riches.

On the surface, this translates to an amazing assortment of historical art on display for visitors, but it also hides a secret anxiety when you realize just how much time it would take to see it all if you were to give each exhibit two minutes to view and appreciate (or even one minute if you wanted to “rush” the experience).

In reality, this means that no matter how many times I visit the museum, there’s always something I didn’t see or notice the last time I was there.

Of course, I’ve seen the classic “must-sees” of the Louvre; everyone does that on their first time through. It’s only on the repeat visits that you start having time to pick out your favourites.

Here are some of my favourite sculptures from the permanent collection on display at the museum.

If you were to spend one minute each on just the 35,000 exhibited items, you’d need 24 days, 7 hours, and 20 minutes before you’d seen it all.

Sculpture: Musée d’Orsay

Though not as famous for its selection of sculpture as it is for its paintings, the Musée d’Orsay nevertheless counts several important pieces of historic and relevant statuary among its collection.

Incredibly interesting for me are some of the prototypes of the sculptures that went on to adorn the many monuments and Beaux-Arts facades of Paris.

Here are some of my favourite sculptures from the permanent collection on display at the museum.

With the number of sculptures on display in the central display area, it’s like Medusa sneezed inside the Main Hall.
